The Wrekin Hill
is the Icon of Shropshire, standing 1,000 feet above the surrounding
land between Telford and Shrewsbury and for the last five
years has been the venue for the Wrekin Barrel Race - a tough
challenge for teams of four people to get a full 9 gallon
beer barrel from the bottom to the top in the quickest time.
The race is organised
by the Lions Club of Shrewsbury to raise money through team
sponsorship for a local good cause. In 2003 the beneficiary
of all the money raised from the event is Hope Children's
Respite Hospice for terminally ill children, which is located
at Morda near Oswestry and serves the Shropshire and North
Wales region. They need to raise £1,3M each year from Public
Donations as they only receive less than £30K from central
Government. This years event has so far raised £4,697.90
with an estimated £1,000 more yet to come in. See
2003 report and photos here.
So if you are
fit, fancy the challenge of a lifetime, some good sport and
can raise some sponsorship for your team, which will help
to support Hope House then go register
