Much Wenlock is where Dr. William Penny Brookes inspired the Modern Olympic Games. The trail starts and ends at the Much Wenlock Museum, near the town square in High Street. In the museum a magnificent collection of Wenlock Olympian Society artefacts are on display illustrating the significant role of Much Wenlock in the revival of the Modern Olympic Games.

The Romans started mining here and the mine continued until 1955 when underground operations ceased. The surface and underground have been preserved by Shropshire County Council and the site can be be visited, with underground tours by the Shropshire Mines Trust on certain days.

The railway was built in 1902 to link the rural community with Welshpool. Today the steam train journey starts at Welshpool up the steep Golfa bank, through the Banwy Valley, into Llanfair Caereinion. Special event during the year are organized & there are also driving experience courses.
