With a population of around 100,000, Shrewsbury is the county town for Shropshire, England.

Set amidst glorious countryside near to the Welsh Borders, it is one of England's finest medieval market towns. But stuck in the past it is not!

The town centre is packed with timber-framed black & white buildings, steep narrow streets and alleyways.

In fact it boasts over 600 listed buildings including the Castle, now a regimental museum and the world-famous Shrewsbury Abbey, home of the fictional Brother Cadfael.

River Severn at Shrewsbury

Charles Darwin was born and educated in Shrewsbury and all around you will find reminders of his association with the town.

The River Severn forms a loop around the town centre offering gentle riverside walks or you can enjoy a trip on the new pleasure boat Sabrina.

Next to the river you can relax in the beautiful Quarry Park., location for the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Continuing on the floral theme, due to the proliferation of plants and blooms, particularly in the summer months, Shrewsbury is often referred to as the "Town of Flowers".

In 2007 the town achieved remarkable victories for the UK in two prestigious international floral community competitions:

Bear Steps

Gold in the European Entente Florale Competition and winner of the International Challenge in the Communities in Bloom Competition.

In 2006 the town was also awarded a Gold Medal in the National Britain in Bloom Competition.

A number of major festivals and unique events are hosted each year, including the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show. The town has recently started to honour our most famous "son" by organising an annual Darwin Festival.

Our major Arts Festival Shrewsbury Summer Season runs from May to September with a range of music, visual arts and theatre events. August Bank Holiday weekend is time for the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the UK's top folk events and don't miss the amazing Shrewsbury International Street Theatre Festival with acts performing throughout the town. Birthplace of
Charles Darwin

Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. He was born in the area of Frankwell at a house called The Mount and was educated at Shrewsbury School.

A Darwin Festival is held in the town each year and you will find various artefacts around Shrewsbury.
