Event Details
We are delighted that Wenlock Books has arranged for Nicola Beauman, founder of Persephone Books, to join us for this year's Festival Literary Evening.
In the glorious surroundings of Acton Round Hall we shall be serving Pimms and smoked salmon sandwiches and are very grateful to Hew and Sue Kennedy for allowing us to use their lovely home.
Nicola will talk about her life in publishing. She was an editor for Virago before founding her own company and her distinctive books – there are now over 70 of them – are all published with silver-grey covers, and inside, the most beautiful end-papers, carefully chosen from fabrics that illustrate either the time period or the book’s emotional content.
She has chosen to concentrate on lost twentieth century women authors and Persephone’s list is full of writers with names such as Dorothy, Lettice, Florence and Winifred, very much reflecting the time in which they were originally published. One of their strengths is that “… at Persephone they know that drama is found most often in the little moments every day, you just have to sit still and read long enough to notice it.”
Acclaimed in New York, London and around the world, this will be a wonderful evening as we glance back over our shoulders to a golden past.
