Bed and Breakfast near Ellesmere
Greenbanks is an attractive red-brick Victorian farmhouse peacefully situated in the tranquility of this unspoilt rural area within sight of the magnificent Welsh hills and close to the Meres and Mosses natural area. Here is a comfortable and welcoming home where light pours in through large windows offering delightful views of the garden.
A haven for birds and butterflies the informal garden extends to a couple of acres including two ponds where dragonflies abound. Paths meander through young native deciduous woodland, which is fenced from farm animals to allow natural regeneration of ground flora. Beyond the garden the fields, hedgerows and watercourses provide important wildlife habitats for a wide range of bird species including yellowhammer, thrush, woodpecker, linnet, lapwing, tawny owl, buzzard, sparrow hawk and curlew. The carefully managed hedgerows on the farm are only cut every two years, reducing disturbance to wildlife and increasing flower and berry numbers; new saplings are tagged and avoided by the hedgecutter to allow the development of new trees. Watercourses are fenced off to prevent cattle poaching and to encourage plant growth; they also provide cover for small mammals such as water voles. The grassland has not been ploughed for many years and now supports a good variety of insects and an abundance of wild flowers.
The historic centres of Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Wrexham and Chester are nearby. Within easy reach are the great houses and gardens of Attingham, Bodnant, Chirk, Erddig and Powis. The small market town of Ellesmere is at the heart of Shropshire’s Lake District with its six glacial meres abundant with water birds. |
