nr. Bishop's Castle Snailbeach Mine was the biggest lead mine in Shropshire and was said to have "more lead per acre than any other mine in Europe". The Romans started mining here and the mine continued until 1955 when underground operations ceased. The surface and underground have been preserved by Shropshire County Council and the site is now managed by volunteers from Shropshire Mines Trust. For full details see their website at
