Operations
Appointments
for routine operations are normally made through reception.
Investigative procedures are often booked through the vet
at the time of consultation.
For operations
booked in the practice clients receive a pre-operative form
explaining the starvation procedures, fee estimate if applicable,
and arrangements for admission/collection. If appointments
are made by telephone these instructions are given verbally.
Please ensure you are happy about the procedure, and ask as
many questions as you feel necessary!
Pre-op
blood tests can be performed on the same day as surgery in
our own lab. This is mainly for older or sick animals, to
ensure their internal organs can withstand an anaesthetic,
or if fluid therapy is required etc. This will be discussed
with you by the vet or nurse. However, if requested pre-op
bloods can be performed even for routine neutering etc. if
the owner feels they would like the peace of mind. Again please
ask for further details if you are interested.
All dogs
and cats should be starved from 8pm the previous evening.
Rabbits
and small furries should not be starved, and we encourage
owners to bring food with them for after surgery.
Water
should be made available until the morning of the operation.
Animals
should be encouraged to pass urine and faeces prior to surgery.
For any
unreasonably dirty animals a bath the day before may be advisable!
Animals
are admitted by the nurse between 9.00am and 9.30am, unless
by prior arrangement.
An admit
form is completed and signed – remembering to obtain
contact phone numbers. At this point any other relevant procedures
should be noted on the form, e.g. clip claws/check ears –
if requested.
Please
notify us if the animal is on any medication or used for showing
(in case clipping is necessary).
Hopefully,
with most operations the animal is then discharged later that
day – usually around 5pm. At this point post-op appointments
should be made. The cost of these appointments is included
in the price, and the appointments are with the nurse.
All surgical
patients are sent home after the procedure with a recovery
diet and painkillers.
Hospitalised
patients.
Clients
may visit at any time during surgery hours, but please try
to give prior notice so that someone is available to give
you an update on your pet.
