On Saturday 6 March 2010 at 7.30pm, Newport’s Beaumaris Singers, with their new Director of Music, Ben Lamb, present an evening of some of the gems of sacred choral music that are so good they should be heard anywhere and on this occasion it’s in Newport’s Cosy Hall. The concert includes Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir, “one of the most charming pieces of sacred music”. Written in the 1630s it employs many of the vivid techniques used in Monteverdi’s secular madrigals.
The concert is aided by the new Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra, formed of professional musicians associated with Litchfield Cathedral and led by Alexander Laing. The programme includes Mozart’s sparkling Missa Brevis in F (K192), which was completed in Salzburg in 1774, when he was 18. Two short sonatas (K145 and K244) will contrast with the chorus between sections of the Missa Brevis.
The programme will also include beautiful pieces by Schutz, Pergolesi, Buxtehude and the slow movement of Bach’s Double violin concerto.
